The great healer of the Tuatha Dé Danann, whose Well of Healing revived the wounded in battle — and who killed his own son out of jealousy.
Dian Cécht is the physician of the Tuatha Dé Danann, credited with tending nearly every wound and ailment that touches the tribe across the mythological cycle. His signature feat comes after the First Battle of Mag Tuired, when King Nuada loses his arm and, by the Tuatha Dé Danann's own law, is barred from kingship while maimed. Working with the smith Credne, Dian Cécht forges Nuada a fully functioning arm of silver — earning Nuada the byname Nuada Airgetlám, "Nuada of the Silver Arm," and restoring him to the throne.
His skill is soon overshadowed by his own son. Miach, unwilling to settle for a prosthetic, regenerates Nuada's original arm from the stump over nine days and nights, flesh and sinew and all. Dian Cécht, humiliated that his son has surpassed him, strikes Miach dead — reportedly needing three blows before the wound proves fatal, since Miach heals himself from the first two. Herbs said to cure every illness in the world grow from Miach's grave, arranged in the pattern of the body's ailments; when Dian Cécht realizes what they are, he scatters them before their properties can be recorded, and their full curative knowledge is lost.
Dian Cécht's other lasting contribution to the tribe is the Well of Sláine (Loch Sláine), a healing well he guards during the climactic Second Battle of Mag Tuired: warriors of the Tuatha Dé Danann who fall wounded are carried to the well and emerge fit to fight again, while their Fomorian enemies have no such advantage. He is also remembered as the father of Airmed, a goddess of herbal medicine who tries to catalogue Miach's plants before her father ruins them.

Healing and medicine — he is the Tuatha Dé Danann's physician, best known for giving King Nuada a working silver arm and for guarding the healing Well of Sláine during the Second Battle of Mag Tuired.
Miach outdid his father by regrowing Nuada's real arm from the stump rather than fitting a prosthetic. Humiliated, Dian Cécht struck him dead — reportedly on the third blow, since Miach healed the first two.
According to the story, herbs capable of curing every human ailment grew from his grave, sorted by which part of the body they treated. Dian Cécht scattered them before their uses could be recorded, and that complete cure was lost.
